Shore A hardness is the most common way of describing how soft or firm a rubber compound is. It is measured with a handheld instrument called a durometer, which presses a small indenter into the rubber's surface under a defined spring force and reads how far the indenter penetrates.
How to read the scale
The Shore A scale runs from 0 to 100. A low reading (soft) means the indenter sinks in easily — a rubber band or a soft gasket compound is typically in the 20–40 Shore A range. A high reading (firm) means the indenter barely penetrates — a shopping-cart wheel or a firm industrial roller might be closer to 90 Shore A.
Most general-purpose molded rubber parts, including bellows, boots, and gaskets, fall somewhere in the 40–70 Shore A range, though the right value always depends on the specific function of the part.
Why hardness matters for bellows and boots
For a flexing part like a bellows, hardness is a trade-off. A softer compound flexes more easily and generates less resistance, but can be more prone to abrasion, tearing, or losing its shape under load. A firmer compound holds its form and resists abrasion better, but flexes with more resistance and can develop stress cracking sooner if it is asked to bend too sharply.
This is why bellows manufacturers select hardness based on the specific convolution geometry, the expected flex radius, and how much load or pressure the part needs to resist while still allowing free movement.
A few practical notes
Shore A hardness describes surface resistance to indentation, not tensile strength, tear resistance, or abrasion resistance directly — two compounds with the same Shore A reading can behave very differently under stress depending on their formulation.
Hardness also varies slightly with temperature and with time after molding, so datasheet values are typically measured under standardized conditions and should be treated as a reference point rather than an exact guarantee for every part in every environment.
